On a self-catering holiday in Fuengirola, Spain, there is ample chance to try a variety of local food and wine. Reviewed below are several of the Spanish wines available in local supermarkets and restaurants.
L’Antigón Rosé, Valencia
This is a deep pink rosé wine, primarily a Grenache blend, 12% apv, but seemingly quite light on first sip. Unlike the majority of bottles in England, which are now screw cap or plastic cork, this bottle had a firmly entrenched proper cork, which came to pieces on the first attempt to remove it.
It has the usual fruity taste associated with deep pink rosés and goes well with pasta. The label suggests it will also accompany fish and seafood, salad and Asian food.
Sold in supermarkets from around €0.99.
L’Antigon Red, Valencia
A thick and heavy red wine, full of blackcurrant and rosehip. It feels dry, to this palate. Suitable for drinking with game and other heavily seasoned dishes as well as mature cheese. This wine comes from a mix of Temperanillo and Grenache grapes and is a ruby red in colour, as befits its taste.
Interestingly enough, the cork came out on first pull with this bottle, and in one piece.
Drunk with pasta in a mature cheese sauce with chorizo and mushrooms.
Sold in supermarkets from around €0.99.
L'Antigon White, Valencia
This light, easy drinking white wine will go well with rice dishes, fish, seafood, pasta, steamed vegetables, salads. It is a straw yellow in colour with faint green tones and although fruity, would do well as an aperitif wine.
Sold in supermarkets from around €0.99.
Comportillo Tinto, Rioja, 2008
A rich 13% Rioja, suitable for pairing with spit roast meat, fish, stew, pasta, rice, cheese and pates. A dark ruby red in colour, this wine is full bodied, fruity, smooth and rounded. It needs a flavoursome meal to bring out the best in the wine.
Drunk with chicken curry, rice and salad.
Senorio de los Llanos, Valdepeñas, 2004
A smooth 12.5% Temperanillo red wine with sweet overtones, a good accompaniment for roast meat and rich seasoned dishes. It has subtle overtones of cocoa and coffee but is in general a fruity and mature wine.
Tested with meat pizza and garlic bread.
Castañeda, 11.5%
Another light, easy to drink white with a brilliant yellow colour. It is clean and crisp and suitable for either drinking alone or with salad or white meat.
This was served with a buffet in the Buffet Libre at Aparthotel Nuria Sol and went well with the wide variety of food on offer there.
